The best of TV and Film

In light of the SFX awards (which is a sci-fi magazine) I thought I'd compile a list very similar with my tops in TV and film.
IN TV
Best TV show
Merlin
CAST: Colin Morgan, Bradley James, Katie McGrath, Angel Coulby, Anthony Head, Richard Wilson, Alex Vlahos, Rupert Young, Eion Macken and John Hurt.
Call the Midwife
Jessica Raine, Miranda Hart, Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Judy Parfitt, Helen George, Bryony Hannah and Laura Main.
Downton Abbey
Maggie Smith, Hugh Boneville, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter, Elizabeth McGovern, Laura Carmichael, Brendon Coyle, Phillis Logan, Dan Stevens, Joanne Froggatt and Rob James-Collier
The White Queen
Rebecca Ferguson, James Frain, Rupert Graves, Caroline Goodall, Amanda Hale, Max Irons, Ben Lamb, Michael Maloney, Faye Marsay, Aneurin Barnard, Eleanor Tomlinson and David Oakes
Doctor Who
Christopher Eccelston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman, Catherine Tate, Karen Gillian, Arthur Darvil and Jenna-Louise Coleman.
Best Actor
Colin Morgan (Merlin)
His role as Merlin was his first major part; he is a truly astonishing actor and will go extremely far in the future. He is able to play about fifty different emotions within a single scene. The last series of Merlin is possibly the most heartbreaking thing I have ever witnessed in my entire life all because Colin embodies Merlin to the point of heartbreak.
Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock)
Often referred to as the chameleon for his diversity and ability to make any role he plays unique and incredibly good. As Sherlock he is arrogant and has a very credible talent to speak extremely long dialogs very fast. (If you watch the show you'll understand what I mean).
Bradley James (Merlin)
Watching Arthur go from being an arrogant and spoilt prince in the first series to the Once and Future king was amazing to behold and Bradley couldn't have been a better choice for King Arthur. He and Colin Morgan also get along very well and have a brilliant chemistry on screen and off.
Aneurin Barnard (The White Queen)
Aneurin really comes into his own in the last four or five episodes of The White Queen. He shows a lot of emotion on his face and is able to make you feel what he is feeling by a simple look in his eyes. I can’t wait to see him in more.
David Tennant (Doctor Who)
Of course I had to include my favourite Doctor on this list, David is able to show the Doctor in love, at war, troubled, happy, sad, worried, angry and I'm not even going to mention The End of Time episodes because his regeneration is ridiculously heart breaking "I don't want to go", no David I wish you hadn't either.
Best Actress
Katie McGrath (Merlin)
Katie shows Morgana's descend into evil in the best possible way. In the first series you love her and then as each series progresses you start to hate her more and more until you physically cannot stand her any longer. It takes great skill to be able to do that and do it well and Katie handles it all with ease.
Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey)
Arguably one of the greatest British actresses that has ever lived. If Maggie Smith is in something you can bet your bottom dollar that it will be worth watching. In Downton Abbey she is a hilarious snob and shows what the first class from that age really acted like.
Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones)
Despite the fact that I don't love Game of Thrones that doesn't mean to say that I don't love Emilia Clarke. She is literally the best character and it perplexes me why they don't show more of her on the show. She's the type of character that is a feminists dream.
Miranda Hart (Call the Midwife)
Despite the fact that Miranda Hart is originally a comedian as Chummy she is brilliant and you get to see how much of a good actress Hart actually is. What's even better is that despite the fact that in Call the Midwife she doesn't try to be funny she is even funnier.
Amanda Hale (The White Queen)
She plays the Red Queen in the White Queen and she plays the slightly deranged woman with huge skill because as much as you may not support her cause you cannot deny that she is a determined, pious woman.

IN FILM
Best film
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
This is the film that sparked the already growing Harry Potter franchise. This film is the perfect exam of the absolute crème de la crème of British film making and acting. The best of British and obviously its based from the most successful children’s book in years.
Despicable Me
This is the perfect family film and that is why it is not only included in this list but the best-animated film list as well. Its good for everyone and every member of the family can take something away from it. It’s heartwarming, funny and just simply brilliant.
Cool Runnings
An old classic really, it showcases the determination, hard work and sportsmanship that are required for any competitor in the Olympics. It’s a hilarious and witty film about working hard to beat your dreams and not letting anything get in your way.
Twilight Tower of Terror
This isn't a popular film, so much so that I cant even buy it on DVD for my region (urgh why) and have to watch it on VHS instead. The infamous ride at all the Disney parks are based from this film and the film is whilst old now still a brilliant film that is always in my top five.
The Amazing Spider-Man
Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone breathe a new ray of life into the Spider-man franchise (At least in my opinion). The story stays pretty true to the comics and I always see myself remembering bits that I read when I was younger. I cannot wait to see the second installment.
Best Actor
Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter)
Considering that Daniel was only a child when he got the part of the infamous boy wizard, he has continually improved and grown up with us. Having to deal with having one of the biggest franchises in the world on your shoulders is no mean feat, but he manages marvelously and really brings to life my favourite fictional character.
Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter)
The villain that haunted my childhood was a role that couldn't be played but just anyone and Ralph Fiennes brings so much to He Who Must Not Be Named that he is frankly terrifying. You only need to watch the bonus features on the discs to see how much he cares about how Voldemort was portrayed in the films.
Warrick Davies (Harry Potter)
Warrick Davies is another of Britain's finest actors and actresses, if he is in something; you just know it’s going to be good. He has managed to turn what some would call a disadvantage into an absolutely multi-million pound advantage.
Robert Downey JR (The Avengers - Iron Man)
Robert Downey JR completely embodies Iron Man and brings the emotion and physicality that is needed for such a big role. He is hilarious and brings light to dark situations. Super actor and brilliant superhero.
Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers - Loki)
One of my favourite Marvel villains I'm not sure why but he sends shivers down my spine in a way that the others simply cannot. He is clever, devious and completely deranged and Hiddleston plays him to perfection.
Best Actress
Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games)
It’s a hard role to play when the character you're taking over is a heroine to many but Jennifer Lawrence handles it with ease and grace. She has remained down to earth despite her huge successes in the recent years and she's not even 25 yet. So I don't know about Katniss being my role model I think Jennifer does that all by herself!
Maggie Smith (Harry Potter)
There’s nothing else to say that I haven't already said, but with such a class actress as Maggie Smith it was only right that she was included in both film and TV. McGonagall is a teacher you love but certainly wouldn't want to mess with.
Emma Watson (Harry Potter)
Like with Dan Emma was only a child when she got the role of Hermione but her talent was strong right from the start. She has cemented the love for Hermione and has given millions of young (and old) girls a smart girl who doesn't rely on her looks to look up to.
Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers)
She's the only female superhero in a group of males so for that reason I think its only fair that she is included on here. She is a total badass not only as the Black Widow but as herself as well.
Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables)
Anne Hathaway is breathtaking in Les Mis, her Oscar speaks for itself but honestly she is a flawless actress. She was also in the Princess Diaries which (despite the fact you will deny it) is an awesome film. So it just shows how diverse she is because she can be in a silly teen movie to a completely heartbreaking musical, doesn't get much different than that!
Best Animated Film
Tangled
Based on the famous Rapunzel fairytale however, this is a brand new take on it. Its funny, cute and pretty fulfilling. Pascal and Max the horse are very welcome additions to the storyline, another Disney classic!
Toy Story
This has to be on best-animated film lists because it is one of the best works of my generation. It is another that makes you happy and reflective, oh and also who doesn't love the thought of all of your toys actually being alive?
Finding Nemo
This film is a heartwarming tale about a fathers love for a son and how he will literally go to the ends of the ocean to find him. If that doesn't sound like a premise to a brilliant film to you then you're sorely mistaken.
Monsters INC
This is the type of Disney film that can be for all ages. Everyone will enjoy and the storyline is hilarious but as with all Disney films they all have a secret message behind them that makes you think. This film never gets old and Monsters University is one of the only sequels (along with Toy Story) that hasn't ruined the franchise but enhanced it.
Brave
One of the newest in Disney releases; I like that Merida isn't your stereotypical princess and she is independent and strong willed, whilst she is obviously still a child and makes a few silly mistakes (Come on, Merida, never trust a witch!) its an excellent film with phenomenal animation.
Most Cinematically Pleasing Film
Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows part 1
The first Harry Potter film away from Hogwarts but that certainly doesn't take away from the spellbinding views and locations that they used to film.
Brave
As mentioned in the previous list Brave is a fantastic example of a human mind (and hand), they created enchanting scenery by the flick of the hand to leave you mesmerised by the view.
The Hunger Games
The arena itself is in a forest and the Districts are something else to behold. Whilst it isn't the prettiest of sceneries, the locations that they used add to the films ambience tenfold.
Up
Again as with Brave, these two films really show just how ridiculously talented Disney animators are. It seems ridiculous that you can be amazed by places that aren't actually real.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
In the light of the TriWizard Tournament there are several new locations, some enhanced by CGI and others actual locations but none more beautiful than the other and of course any view of the Hogwarts castle has me wishing I were there.
IN BOTH
Sexiest Male
Colin Morgan (Merlin)
Alex Vlahos (Merlin)
Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter)
Bradley James (Merlin)
Aneurin Barnard (The White Queen)
Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers)
Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock)
Most Attractive Female
Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games)
Katie Mcgrath (Merlin)
Emma Watson (Harry Potter)
Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones)
Right thats it for my awards this year and bloody hell that took far longer to write than I anticipated, but oh well!

My kind of decoration

My bookcase is my pride and joy. I know it sounds ridiculous but honestly it is my favourite part of my room, so in saying that I like to spend a lot of money to make it look awesome. Apart from obviously housing my books it also showcases a couple of my favourite action figures.

So starting with those from Harry Potter

Harry Potter from the first year and I believe that this figure is limited edition because of the cobwebbed cloak, however, that's just a guess.
We have a broomstick, a TimeTurner and Hedwig in his cage, which if you would like to see the two latter items in more detail, click HERE

This is Professor Quirrel and if you turn his turban around it has the face of Voldemort on it which is a pretty cool feature.
Then we have probably my favourite trio of figures. Harry Potter, Fred and George Weasley in their Gryffindor Quidditch uniforms and a broomstick.

Then we have a Goblin from Gringotts Wizard bank and a cart full of 'jewels'.
And a small Harry Potter Lego figure of him by a potions 'classroom'.
 Next up is Toy Story
Buzz Lightyear and Woody and Buzz again

These are actually on my DVD bookcase but I thought I'd show them anyway. They are Woody and Buzz in cars.

Next is random stuff

Batman, Spiderman, a small Cyberman and a broomstick, because I like to represent the fact that I am multi-fandoms.
Stitch, Rex from Toy Story and a jar of sweets in a Honeydukes jar from the Studio Tour.

Dalek and Cyberman from the Doctor Who experience.
Again these are on my DVD bookcase but oh well, it still counts. Woody and a PygmyPuff called Arnold obviously from the Harry Potter studio tour.

Then we have the top of my bookcase

Scooby Doo, a killer whale from Sea World that is made of rubber and is pretty heavy actually, a Mickey Mouse trophy saying Best Daughter because obviously I am, a large Buzz Lightyear.
A Rex from Toy Story, Papa Smurf, Simba from the Musical The Lion King, Stinky Pete, Eeyore, a Radley box with batteries in it and china dove birds and finally my Elder wand.

Phew, so that's it!

Favourite actors, actresses, films, TV shows and books.

Favourite actors:
  • Daniel Radcliffe
He brought to life my all time favourite fictional character and therefore he will always be a very special part in my heart. I also admire that although Harry Potter is over, he has continued to work and branch away from the franchise but still completely smashing everything that he does.
  • Colin Morgan
The way that he puts so much emotion into every single thing that he does is incredible. I also really love his personality and I think he is just genuinely a nice guy. I don't think I could say enough good things about Colin. I would give anything to meet him face to face.

Favourite actresses:
  • Dame Maggie Smith
I simply cannot put into words how much I love Maggie Smith; not only is she Professor McGonagall another of my favourite literacy characters but her part as the Dowager Countess in Downton Abbey is brilliant, she takes such a brilliant part in the show and completely steals the lime light from every other character in the shot. I also seriously admire her so much, the fact that she carried on filming the Harry Potter films despite the fact that she had breast cancer, is something you really must tip your hat off to.
  • Jennifer Lawrence
Seriously though when have you ever seen a bad film that Jennifer Lawrence has been in? Never.
  • Emma Watson
She completely is Hermione Granger and she flies the flag high for all of the nerds. I love how much she loves acting and not only was she brilliant in Perks but it just shows that actually, yes, she can be a diverse and brilliant actress, who is such an incredible role model for young girls.

Favourite books:
(I am excluding Harry Potter from this one, but if you want to read why it is my favourite of all time click here)

  • The Hunger Games (series)
Its a crazy popular book for a reason: It has some truly brilliant writing and anything that has such a big franchise as The Hunger Games; deserves to be credited. This series is the type where I can see myself re-reading them for years and years to come.
  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Totally cliché of me I know: However, this book seriously captures the crappy and the good parts of being a teenager and shows the vulnerable experiences of 'teenhood' that we find so hard to describe brilliantly.
  • The Woman in Black
How a book can scare me so very much I will never know however, this book captures your heart in your mouth so brilliantly that you can literally envision the Woman In Black creeping up behind you. (argh, it still sends shivers down my spine) Definitely don't read before bed!
  • Here Come the Girls
A completely harmless, obvious but such a feel good book that whenever I am cheesed off  is one of the first books I pick up off my shelf. If you have been on a cruise before then you will love this book as it is all described so well you can just imagine yourself on the boat with the girls in the story.

Favourite films:
(again excluding Harry Potter)
  • Any and all Disney films
I couldn't name all of my favourites because to be honest I just love them all and so if you put a Disney movie on I will quite happily sit there and watch it. Although my absolute favourites include Tangled, The Lion King, Finding Nemo and Monsters INC.
  • Just Go With It
Yes, its a chick flick and obviously the two main characters fall in love at the end; but with Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler in it then you really cant go wrong. It's light hearted and funny and is just a generally good film to watch with anyone.

  • The Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror
Another Disney film, but an old one. In fact the ride at Disney is based on this film and I do believe that they used the very same ride as a set (although I could be making that up, I'm not too sure). Anyway, its not scary at all (it is a Disney film after all) but its a film I never tire of watching, my only problem is that I cant find it on DVD anywhere! *sad face*

Although I have only listed three, I am a major movie junkie and will watch probably anything that you sit me down in front of, just hand me some food and I'm set!

Favourite TV shows:
  • Merlin
Possibly and this is a very bold statement but I think Merlin could be my favourite TV show of all time *gasp*. It will come as no surprise to you all of course, but I just simply love it and my love for the characters, plot, actors and the clear affection between the cast both on and off screen is getting slightly ridiculous. (read more about why I like it here in a five series review)

  • Downton Abbey
I simply cannot stress to you how much I love Downton, its one of those shows that should be boring but is so exciting and just amazing that you simply cannot stop watching. I am craving series four extremely badly right now after the cliffhanger on the Christmas episode (which I reviewed here). It is a program for everyone and is only going from strength to strength.

  • Doctor Who
More so the older ones from series one to about series 5, but I am still enjoying the show a lot despite some dodgier ones in the most recent series'. I don't really need to go too much into detail because I'm pretty sure every human in the world has at least seen one episode of it!

  • Call the Midwife
Again, very much the same as with Downton but I really just cant seem to get enough of this kind of show. It really warms my heart and again here is review I have done of the show previously.

So thats it for now, but I will be doing another post shortly on more things that are my favourites (link to follow).

(A few) Favourite fictional characters from TV and FILM

As with reading I watch a lot of TV and films so again I have developed a lot of favourite characters. Finding a TV programme or a film that you love can be somewhat magical, the best will bring you to tears and make you laugh within the space of two seconds.

First up we have Merlin (from Merlin shown on the BBC, 5 series long). Merlin, for me is not only the greatest sorcerer in the world but also the greatest friend in the world; he protects Arthur within an inch of his life and his devotion to him is clear. He is the bravest of all the characters; despite him not having any combat training he is always by Arthur’s side going into battle or on a hunt. He of course has magic at his disposal, but Arthur doesn't know that. In fact Merlin has to keep his true identity hidden until the (completely unspeakable) finale of the show. Imagine trying to keep hold of a secret because if you told someone you’d end up burnt at the stake; but what’s even more amazing is that Merlin didn't not tell Arthur for that reason; he didn't tell him because he didn't want to put Arthur in the position where he would have to choose whether to let Merlin live or kill him should he know his true potential.

Next up is Arthur Pendragon (From Merlin). When Arthur is first shown on the programme, he is shown as an arrogant and spoilt boy whose father is the king: he is a bully and nothing more, but as the series’ continue Arthur blossoms into the fantastic “once and future king of Camelot” that his destiny foretells. He values the kindness and service of everyone in his rule: including the servants, so much so in fact that he marries one. In an episode when Merlin gets kidnapped, Arthur wants to send out a search party for the lost boy, his father (of course) disagrees asking “All this for a serving boy?” but to Arthur people are not just simply classed by their profession or upbringing but by the decency of their character. Also unlike Uther (his father), he admits when he has done wrong and repents for his sins.

Next up is an animated Character from Disney Pixar’s Brave, Meredith. Meredith may possibly be one of my favourite animated characters to come out of modern day Disney. She is brave (….pun unintentional), completely fabulous and Scottish. I love that she stands up for her own right to choose whom she should marry, and she unites all of the lands together again because despite her being a royal, she completely blows all stereotypes of a Disney princess out of the water.

Lady Sybil Crawley from Downton Abbey (ITV, 3 series in total) is another completely fierce woman, with whom I adore. She completely breaks the mould of what her parents expect from her and during the war she goes off and gets the qualifications that she needs to become a nurse and help out in the war effort. She is a revolutionist and huge feminist, she is another strong character that stands up for what she believes in and doesn't believe in stereotypes, she believes in equality and freedom for all. (I can’t believe they killed her off, NOPE I will never get over it).

I also love Sherlock Holmes from BBC's Sherlock because I love the way that he is just insanely clever and can figure anything out about 10 minutes before anyone else has even give the case a thought. I'm not going to lie but a huge reason why I like him so much is that I met Benedict Cumberbatch who plays the famous Holmes. He was so, so nice and friendly that my liking for the Cumberbatch has transpired to liking his character even more.

I really like Rapunzel from Tangled because I love that she is eager to try new things and despite her mother telling her to never leave the tower, she is determined to do so in order to find her dream of seeing the 'floating lights'. I would also very much like a little Pascal, so hand him over, blondie!

Another of my favourite animated fellows, is Peter Pan, simply because I don't want to grow up either! In fact I do sometimes think I am Peter Pan reincarnated in female form.

So that's all for now, I'm sure I will carry on doing these posts as I don't want to bombard you with information and bore you to tears, therefore, I am only showing you a few of my favourites, rather than creating a 25 page long blog post that no one will read.
If you are still interested to see who else I enjoy in the fictional world read my blog post on my favourite fictional characters in books
