In Beacon Heights High, Nolan Hotchkiss is king. His charm, wealth and good looks are deceptively seductive, and many are the students whose lives and reputations have been ruined by it. All while Nolan continues to reign, unquestioned and undisrupted. Until now, that is.

Mackenzie, Ava, Julie, Caitlin and Parker seemingly don't have much in common. Each has their own friends, dramas and goals. But one thing they do share: they all have a deep hatred of Nolan Hotchkiss. And they all think it's about time he paid for what he's done. They come up with the perfect murder - a hypothetical murder, of course. It's all wishful thinking ... until they wake up one morning to find that their wish has come true. Nolan has been killed - in exactly the way they planned. The thing is, they didn't do it. So who did?- taken from Goodreads

The book is about a group of girls who are thrown together in a class all of whom have had negative encounters with Nolan Hotchkiss, the school's most popular, perfect boy. When they decide to get their own back they joke about how they would kill him if they were given the chance. When they get to the party that they have arranged will be the time to play a prank on Nolan, they perform the prank and even upload pictures online anonymously and other than a bit of a guilty conscience they seem to get away with it. That is until the next morning when Nolan is found dead by the exact method the girls had previously joked about, they then of course set about finding out who killed him and who is trying to frame them.

I am going to preface this review with the fact that this is the first book I have read by this author, however, I watch Pretty Little Liars (Shepard wrote the original book series) so I am familiar with her style of writing. So lets get to the negatives first - my biggest issue with this book was that it had an overwhelming feeling of just a recycled version of PLL with different characters, you know with the plot line of mystery over a murder of a popular person, someone framing the group of girls, they all have motives for being the murderer etc.

On the other hand, PLL was successful for a reason, the plot line is effortless and flows well, this book is fairly short but equally as fast paced. All the characters have different lives and what was interesting was that none of them were really friends beforehand and were thrown together because of the incident, I think it will be interesting to see how such different characters will get on in later books. Although all the cliches are there they don't feel that overdone which you have to give props to Shepard for.

I fairly enjoyed my time reading this book and I think if I had read this when I was slightly younger I would have loved it. I will be picking up the next book as it has hooked me enough to want to know what happens as there was no resolution at all at the ending of this book (although I really hope it isn't a 15+ book series like PLL). So whilst this book has its flaws, you cannot deny that it was addictive and a light enjoyable read.

When it was first announced that these two authors were teaming up to write a middle grade fantasy I couldn't have been more excited. I throughly enjoy Cassandra Clare's writing and have enjoyed most of what I've read from Holly Black, this was set up to be a great book even before I had started it.

So many people have compared this to Harry Potter and to be honest I think that's ridiculous. Due to the novel being set in a magic school, then of course there will be similarities, but the way this magic works is totally different, the teachers are totally different and so is the way that you get chosen to go into the school in the first place. I almost feel as though people were picking things up just to spite themselves, all middle grade fantasy books follow a very strict progression of having a trio or double fighting against a greater evil, this isn't just specific to Harry Potter!

I felt like the writing (baring in mind that it is a middle grade and not a YA) was pretty great, it flowed really nicely and it was obvious to me that the two authors worked meticulously to make sure that there were no obvious splits in the writing, it seemed as though they were one voice, which was extremely refreshing because usually joint authorships are quite disjointed.

The world building could have been expanded on slightly, but you must remember that this is only the first in (what I think) is a five book series and so it will be explored more throughout the series. I enjoyed the magical element of this book, I liked that although you had your standard Earth, Water, Fire and Air magic you also had a Chaos element, which in my opinion brought something fresh to the table.

I thought that the characters were interesting and although at first there were quite a few characters to deal with they all got their own personality and soon enough it was easy to remember who was who. The plot twist at the end, had I been the intended age group for this would have blown me away (although I was still pretty impressed by it) and that is exactly what I am looking for in this type of book.

All in all, I loved this book, it was exactly what I needed and I think it is a fun read, when people read this they need to remember that is not a young adult book it is a middle grade book and so of course its not going to be as complicated! Take it for what it is and I think you will love it.

When Quirk books offered the chance to get an early copy of this book I jumped at the chance, after all I am a proud fangirl, so why on earth would I not want a copy?

This is a small and incredibly well made little guide on all things fandom and specifically how to cope with being a female in a male dominated group. (although as Sam points out, in this day and age there is pretty much a total 50/50 of male and female geeks and so why on earth women are still questioned about if they really are 'fan enough' baffles me.)

The first thing I want to point out is the cover, its totally awesome (and I really want a graphic novel from Kelly Bastow who did the illustrations throughout, which again are totally awesome) and under the dust jacket is one of the most awesome hardbacks I've seen, plastered with the TARDIS, a robot, a bow and arrow, just to name a few all topped off with some bows, I want this on a wallpaper.

Whilst this is a guide for beginners who are just entering the fan world (man, I wish I had this book a few years ago!) even your most experienced fangirl will learn a few things. For example all of the slang of fanfictions are explained, theres a convention guide on what to take with you and what to do and what not to do, a guide on 'fangirl speak' (which is completely necessary if you are a newbie), awesome interviews with iconic female authors and general content creators and so much more. There is also a very helpful resource chapter at the back filled with nerdy shops, websites and tutorials.

What was even more awesome though is the sense of empowerment that this book gave me as a female fan. I have never read any kind of feminist book before, I guess I was pretty daunted by it and assumed they would be preachy. This was nothing like that. Instead it talked about how women (who account for over half of the fandoms) have just as much right to love comics and television shows without being judged, just like can men do.

The book is written very conversationally and Sam Maggs' humour totally radiates throughout the book making it a really pleasant read and a perfect gift for all of your fangirl friends.

Bloodlines is the first book in the spin-off series to Vampire Academy, whilst a few of the characters from VA appear in this series it predominately focuses on new characters, or characters that didn't play a massive part in the other series, this book creates another dimension to the VA world.

Sydney, the main protagonist was first introduced in Blood Promise (from the VA series) and this spin off series focuses on the aftermath of helping Rose Hathaway with her predicaments from the previous series. Sydney is an Alchemist, which is a group that works alongside the Vampires and covers up any Strigoi attacks, however, they absolutely hate both the Moroi and the Dhampirs and think that they are an abomination. So when Sydney Sage is enlisted to help try and protect the next in line to the Moroi crown she isn't too pleased. Or so it seems. Her role in helping Rose has ensured that she is left throughly confused about if the Alchemists views on Vampires is entirely true.

In Vampire Academy Sydney was a very odd, one-dimensional character with no real personality, however, this book she really gets to show herself off. She is annoying and flawed, like almost every protagonist in YA fantasy fiction, she is arrogant when it comes to her intelligence and sometimes her inner turmoil over the Vampires is a little frustrating, but totally understandable given the circumstances.

Adrian, for me is the real star in this book. I liked him a lot in VA but I absolutely love him in Bloodlines. I love that he is so flawed and a complete mess but he knows it and owns it. He has the best one liners with his sarcastic, witty usually rude remarks and always, always offers a sense of relief and entertainment. I am glad that he is finally having a life after Rose completely ditched him at the end of VA (nope, I'm still not over it).

The plot in this book was brilliant, it was fairly slow at the start when it was setting the scene and the characters but as it progressed I was hooked. I like that although Sydney is the main protagonist, every other character like Eddie and Jill as well as Adrian all have their moments of spotlight and I really feel as if you get to know them all, rather than just getting one side of the situation. Its clever how even though it is all through Sydney's perspective you still feel as though you are getting to know the other secondary characters.

Overall, I was very impressed with this book and am extremely excited to continue on, I love Richelle Mead's writing and the way she world builds and her character progression is like no other.

On a side note though, I really wish that both this series and Vampire Academy have cover changes as they just really, really don't give an accurate representation of the book and I feel like so many people will be put off by the covers.

Because Grandma Betty isn't here to play nice—she is cranky, intolerant of Mika's mixed-race-couple parents, and oh yeah she has Alzheimer's and is out of money. While Mika's family would rather not deal with Grandma Betty, they don't have much choice. And despite Mika's protests, she is roped into caring for a person that seems impossible to have compassion for. And if that wasn't hard enough, Mika must train the new guy at her pet shop job who wants to be anywhere else, and help a friend through her own family crisis. Something's gotta a give, but whichever ball Mika drops means losing someone she loves. Not exactly a recipe for Best Summer Ever—or is it?"

So typically these types of books annoy the hell out of me (you know the ones where the female protagonist drops everything to be with the boy who is oh so dreamy?) but this was totally different. There seemed to be much more substance to it than just girl meets boy, girl falls head over heels in love with boy, some problem happens that tears them away, boy apologises and they live happily ever after. That did happen, but it was the other stuff that went on that really set this one apart from other contemporary books I've read.

The first thing I liked was that these characters all talk and act like real teenagers, which is what so many contemporary books do wrong by making the teenagers seem far too mature and pretentious, you could really imagine these scenarios happening. It is important for me to feel as though I can connect or at least recognise these characters rather than reading about some dreamboat guy who speaks poetry as if its his first language. The level of love-talk and actual real life conversations were balanced really well in this book.

The second thing I liked was how the author explored Alzheimer's. I have a personal experiences with this disease in the family and to see it portrayed so real was refreshing and equally important. It was amazing to see how raw it was, I think its obvious that the author either also has personal relationships with this disease or has done a lot of research about it because everything she wrote was just so accurate. It really encapsulated how scary it is to not know where you stand with someone you love (or have grown to love), one day they are your best friend and the next they are screaming and shouting at you. I think it was really brave to talk about it so truthfully.

The third thing I liked was how race and prejudice was shown. It was interesting to read from the perspective of someone who is often at the butt of others jokes or inconsiderate comments. There needs to be more books like this, it was a welcome change to read something from a 'diverse' character that isn't totally thrown in your face every five minutes that they are different. You were just reading from a character that had really harsh things said about her and you subconsciously thought "oh well thats not right", it was all just done very well.

And finally, I can't really do a review without talking about Dylan. He is one of the best love interests I've read from in a YA contemporary. His character progression was amazing and I must say the romance was cute (although occasionally I did roll my eyes at the severity of it all, I guess I'm just not that romantic) and the characters are totally what made this book so fun to read. I am a fan of flawed characters, and this certainly had its fair share of flawed characters. Mika, the main protagonist loses her temper, is quick to judge and sometimes thinks before she speaks, but she is also strong, loyal and funny. Her friends, family and Clark her boss all have minor parts but the author makes it clear how much they impact Mika, again really encapsulating real life scenarios of how people around you affect you.

The premise sounded like something I would enjoy and I was intrigued because it was a debut novel and I'm always keen on supporting new authors.

I will start by saying that I will be continuing on with this series as I felt that this book was a well written one. Once I got into the story at around 50 pages I wanted to keep reading, the plot was fast paced, although occasionally any action scenes did go by in the blink of an eye but I wouldn't say that is a negative. Whilst the plot and characters itself aren't the most imaginative in the world, I think that the actual world of Red and Silvers and their abilities IS original and incredibly interesting. That being said I can see why this book has got a lot of hype, but I am glad I read this without reading too much into the hype as I do think that would have left me feeling slightly disappointed.

You don't know who to trust in this novel, everyone is suspicious and everyone has their own motives. I can't say I loved anyone in this novel but that's not really the point. Mare, the main protagonist was often annoying and made mistakes (so like pretty much all of the protagonists in YA dystopians) but she was made of fire and wit. I can't imagine how she found the will to go on when everything was against her. The Silvers are menacing and so overpowering that it made me wonder a) how they got their abilities and b) why the Red's don't just band together and overrule them, its often hinted at that the Reds outnumber the Silvers, but then I supposed you wouldn't really want to go against someone who has the ability to read your mind and disable your thoughts...

I can see great things in this author's future if this is the standard of her debut novel. Harper Collins did a great job in snapping her up, I am looking forward to the sequel. If you are a fan of dystopians then I would recommend this in a heartbeat.

“Hi,” he
called out

Yara’s heart
hammered, and adrenaline coursed through her limbs. She turned to run.

“Wait,” the
stranger whispered. “I won’t turn you in. I’m out here too.” He obviously
didn’t realize that Yara was a rebel. He might not know it yet, but he would
soon. Still, he didn’t sound dangerous. Maybe Yara could take care of him. She
had never had to kill anyone totally human, but she had trained to do so. At
this point, she didn’t think she would need to. The skinny boy didn’t look like
a real threat, either.

She turned
back toward him and attempted what she hoped was a look of death and
destruction.

Instead of
being scared, he smiled at her and brushed the hair out of his eyes. Even in
the shadowy street, Yara could see the color was a beautiful emerald green. She
had a hard time looking away, until his voice jarred her back to reality.

“I’m
Joshua15111,” he said robotically. “What are you doing out here?”

“I could ask
you the same thing.”

“Enjoying the
night sky,” he replied, each word clipped and succinct. Unable to make
prolonged eye contact, he looked toward the stars.

“Aren’t you
supposed to be hooked up to an alternate universe, enjoying battle, boobs, or
whatever perverted fantasy you want to conquer tonight?” Yara asked, and then
instantly regretted her words.

“Hey, it’s
not like that. You know how it is.” For the first time, his voice took on a
more humanistic quality. He sounded peeved.

She grunted
in response. She didn’t know anything of the sort.

Joshua15111
looked at her briefly, quizzically. “Wait, do you know that? Are you one of
them? The rebels?”

Oh no. “What
rebels?”

“Are you for
real? Everyone knows about the rebels. You must be one. Are you a rebel? That’s
so cool.”

Me and my big
mouth. Fear finally overtook her. Vague ideas about running away from or
fighting the stranger flitted by, but Yara’s feet felt like concrete blocks.
She wasn’t even sure she’d be able to form a coherent sentence if he asked her
something about the underground.

This book, if you read my most anticipated reads of 2015 (which if you haven't you can read here) will come as no surprise as it was featured on there. I just adore the sound of this book it definitely puts me in the mind of The Selection trilogy by Keira Cass, which I loved so hopefully I love this just as much. It has also had some pretty amazing reviews so basically roll on February so I can get my little mitts on this book!

The best way to describe this book to you is that it is a YA equivalent of Game of Thrones. It is so epic and amazing that you will be left amazed by the character progression and the beginnings of a huge series. I knew about 20 pages in that I would love this book and it certainly didn't disappoint.

When I had this book for Christmas I knew that I wanted to read it as soon a possible because it is everything that I love about fantasy, you have duel perspectives, battling countries and fantastically written characters.

Whilst this book tends to focus more on the characters than the world building, there is never a lack of any aspect. I knew exactly what to picture when the author was writing the scenes but I think that is because it takes the backdrop of many classic fantasy stories and nothing is totally unimaginable despite the mutterings of magical elements. Thats right, theres magic in this book as well!

The magic element was probably my favourite, it wasn't the main plot but I can tell that it will in the end be the most important factor in this series, the hints and then the stories were super interesting and The Kindred and The Watchers were unique and like nothing I have read before.

Now lets talk about characters... Cleo is one of the best characters I've read about, she is independent, head strong, a little reckless and full of passion. I throughly enjoyed her segments and I think that she has such a strong voice, despite everything that happens she remains strong and I think I may love her slightly.... Magnus is a very intriguing character, I really can't make my mind up about him and to be honest I don't think he can make his mind up about himself. He is mean and reckless and totally like his father but then on the other hand he is nothing like his father because he does feel remorse, but he still does all of these things anyway so does the fact that he feels remorse make any difference? AH I don't know, but this is why I love this book so much because no character is as black and white as they originally seem, they are complex and real. Jonas is again very complex, he wants to avenge his brother but he also has a softer heart and I think that makes him so much more dangerous and so much more threatening to the surroundings, he is also incredibly clever and brave and I think in the second book he will really come into his own.

I can't really say anymore without spoiling anything but I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is too threatened by the size of Game of Thrones, or who finds the GOT series a bit dense because this is everything that is good about GOT but in my opinion even better because there aren't as many characters, the world is not as complex and the writing flows so well that it makes it a super quick read.

A new year, a new me. Or so the saying goes... whilst I don't believe that anyone fully changes on New Years Eve, I do enjoy setting particular goals I would like to achieve in the new year. 2015 is set to be a massive year for me personally but I almost never follow through with personal resolutions so instead I will set some goals for my reading instead.

1. In 2014 I set myself a goal of reading 30 books, which I achieved before mid year and so increased it to 45 and then just let myself see how many more I could read. I ended up reading 80 books which I am very happy with. This year I even debated not setting a Goodreads goal, but when the time came along I decided that I wanted to put my goal to 50 books, I feel like this is manageable because it is just under a book a week so hopefully it will be okay, however, I won't mind if I have to reduce the goal, its not set in stone or anything, but I feel happy.

2. As for the book buying, well that is something that definitely needs to be tackled, I expanded my collection by two whole bookcases this year, which is frankly ridiculous. I will not put myself on a book ban because I never stick to those and instead just think about the books I wish I could be buying and then binge when the ban ends and that defeats the whole object. Instead, I will place a limit, so for example if I were to buy 5 books at a time I will need to make sure I have read at least 1 or 2 before I consider buying anymore. Also, I will make sure that I read a lot of reviews and opinions before I buy a book I am unsure about rather than just buying it anyway and either being disappointed or it never getting read. There have been a few instants where I have purely only brought something because I saw one good review on it and then it ended up siting on my shelf unread for months and months.

3. Work on my blog more often and write reviews as soon as I have read the books instead of waiting a few months and then having to try and remember what I thought about them.

4. In 2015 there are a few books on my shelves that I definitely want to read, because they have been there for a while. They are...
5. I would like to read more graphic novels this year, I have enjoyed all the ones that I have read but I am often put off by the price so hopefully if I buy less novels I can buy more graphic novels.

That is about it, I can't think of anymore, the book buying will definitely be stunted because I will (hopefully) be going to university in September and will be living on a student budget, so it will be a case of buying food or buying books... I think we all know which is more important.......(books) I kid, I kid...

Happy new year!

As it stands these books are from authors that I have either read books from before, part of a series that I am reading and paperback releases. However, throughout the year when people start talking about debut books or authors I have never heard about I get excited and want to read them as well and put them on my wishlist, so perhaps this list will need updating throughout the year, but as of right now here are my most anticipated releases of 2015, in no particular order. (Also I cant believe it is 2015, I feel like 2014 literally flew by)
Feyre's survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill - the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. This is probably my most anticipated book of 2015. I love Sarah J Maas I think she is a brilliant writer and it will also be incredible to have another story whilst we wait for the next Throne of Glass book!
Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives.

After their secret romance is exposed, Sydney and Adrian find themselves facing the wrath of both the Alchemists and the Moroi in this electrifying conclusion to Richelle Mead's New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series. When the life of someone they both love is put on the line, Sydney risks everything to hunt down a deadly former nemesis. This is the final instalment of the Bloodlines series, I am taking it slow and currently am on the fourth book as I wanted to pace myself so that I can read Silver Shadows next month so I am ready for this book. I love this series I think its incredible, the writing is incredible and Mead has such a fluid writing style. Although on a side note, these books have the worse covers ever, they probably put so many people off from reading it!!
Her love, Daniel Cohen, is a reporter in town, and Gretchen is content. Then a telegram sends Daniel back to Germany, and her world turns upside-down when she learns that Daniel is wanted for murder. To save him, she must return to her homeland and somehow avoid capture and recognition by her former friends, the Nazi elite.
I read 80 books this year, which is a personal best, so I'm happy, I also surpassed my initial goal of reading 30 books in May and then increased it to 45 so to read 80 is amazing. I read so many great books this year and not that many rubbish ones so I think 2014 was a success in terms of reading. *These books didn't necessarily come out in 2014*
If possible this one was even better than the first, I cannot wait to keep up with this series and just see it evolve and get better and better. The fantastical elements were more prominent in this book and I certainly enjoyed it.

After the disappointment of the first five books of the Mortal Instruments it took me so long to pick up this trilogy, but holy crap, it was incredible and is in my top three trilogies of all time it was incredible, such amazing writing and characters. I would have preferred to have this be the long series rather than TMI but there we go.

If you would have said to me before this book that a Mortal Instruments book would be on my top books of the year list I would have laughed because before this one they just simply were not up to the hype (in my opinion) but it is obvious that after writing The Infernal Devices, Clare had developed her writing and this book was amazing. It was a very acceptable conclusion, although I had issues I basically inhaled this 700+ paged book in less than 24 hours.

Another amazing conclusion to a brilliant series that is unlike anything that I have read before. This is not just a middle grade book, it had depth and laughs, you can also learn a lot whilst reading. I think that this should be read more in schools because honestly the lessons you learn about friendship and bravery as well as all about the Greek myths is unparalleled to anything I've read before.

This is a collection of 12 short stories from 12 popular YA authors all based in the festive season. I have read many of the authors in this book and enjoyed what I had seen, so I didn't hesitate to pick this up when it came out, I have saved it until this point to really get me into the festive spirt. So in order to be fair I will review each story individually.

Midnights by Rainbow Rowell

I have enjoyed both of the Rainbow Rowell books I have read and so was excited to be kickstarting the book off with this one. I will say it would have made more sense for this to be one of the last as it is set on New Years Eve, but nonetheless, it was an okay story. Due to the nature of this book being short stories I find it super difficult to connect with the characters, I felt like there was hardly any plot driving it and the ending pretty obvious, but then again it is a stereotypical contemporary storyline just quickened up, so really I feel like had this been extended over a proper novel, I would have had far more enjoyment out of it.

The Lady and the Fox by Kelly Link

I really didn't get on with this story. I just didn't get it. I felt like the author wanted to leave a lot of the story up to your imagination but in a way that totally sacrificed the value of the words and it ended up just being a jumble.

Angels in the Snow by Matt de la Peña

Ah I really liked this one, I felt like it was very real and honest. I want to check out more from this author because I really enjoyed the writing, the characters and all that this simple story had to offer.

Polaris is Where You'll Find Me by Jenny Han

This was probably the most Christmasy so far purely because it was set in the North Pole with Santa and Elves, it had a very 'Elf' feel about it. It got what it needed to do done and I was left satisfied with it.

Your Temporary Santa by David Levithan
This story made me feel a bit uneasy, not sure if it was the ending or what but it started off to be a nice festive read of a boyfriend doing something kind and I don't know but towards the end it felt kind of ...sinister I guess.

It's a Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown by Stephanie Perkins
This was my favourite story of them all because I feel like it got the Christmas spirit in there without it being overpowering or ridiculous but it was fun and the characters were really well developed considering the short length. I'd be interested in reading a whole novel about these characters.

Krampuslauf by Holly Black
Um, this was okay, I don't really have an opinion on it, I think it worked fairly well as a short story but was a little odd. For me Holly Black's writing is a little touch and go but this was just okay.

What the Hell Have You Done, Sophie Roth? by Gayle Forman

This was a nice enough story, the characters were fun, it was a typical contemporary but that's fine. The writing was nice and flowed well, certainly wasn't the worst in the book.

Beer Buckets and Baby Jesus by Myra Mcentire
Meh, this was okay but I could have done without reading it. I felt like it was predictable and just a bit too flat.

This would have done far, far better in either a short story book with just fantasy stories or as a long novel.

All in all, I was disappointed with this, it had so much hype around it but for me it just didn't deliver. I didn't feel anymore festive than before and to be honest I felt like the combination of some contemporary and then a random fantasy thrown in just didn't mix well. I felt like a lot of these stories were the same, whilst usually I wouldn't mind reading a stereotypical contemporary, because hey sometimes that's what you're in the mood for, constantly reading the same thing over and over again just with different ethnicities, genders and sexualities got boring and that's why I feel like I lost my patience with this. Whilst I enjoy many of these authors individual books I just don't connect well with short stories in general. Perhaps give this a go if all you read is contemporary and skip the ones that had fantasy elements because as short stories they just did not work well at all.
Jenn and Greg go for a break to enjoy languorous, hot afternoons by the pool. But the equilibrium is upset by the arrival of Greg's daughter (Jenn's step-daughter), Emma, and her boyfriend, Nathan. Jenn is in her early 40s, loves her husband and her daughter and she is content, to an extent. But when this beautiful, reckless young man comes into her life, she is driven by a sexual compulsion that she's seldom felt since adolescence. The holiday progresses and her world is thrown into tumult as the lines blur between desire and obsession--it is not just the idea of sexual fulfillment that Jenn finds attractive but the suggestion of youth: by Nathan's side, Jenn is young and carefree once again, and at this stage in her life, the promise of youth is every bit as seductive as the promise of passion. What follows is a highly charged narrative liaison that puts lives in jeopardy and percolates with just enough sexual tension to make it impossible to put down." -taken from Goodreads
I only really picked this book up because I have seen it everywhere recently and so I wanted to see what it was about. All I really knew was that the stepmother starts to have an affair with her daughter's boyfriend when on holiday.

I don't really think that this book had much depth at all, I felt like it was just trying to achieve the shock factor but the relationships between the characters were not very well developed and were rushed. The only thing that was fairly well done was the descriptions of the location, but even they were boring.

There was no progression of feelings from Jenn about Nathan, it just sort of happened, it could have been explored with so much more passion and feeling, but it just fell flat. The blurb says that this is a 'highly charged narrative', I honestly don't understand how that can be said when there was nothing of the sorts.

This was quick paced read that lacked anything special. I would give this a miss because even if you are into erotica, even those scenes were rushed and just tacky. I understand why it had such a buzz to it because the plot is so taboo but it could have be done so much better and so much more realistically.
I must admit that what attracted me to this book was the cover, I think it could be one of my absolute favourites but after reading the description I knew it would be a book that I would enjoy. It certainly didn't disappoint. Usually when a book has a lot of war strategy in it I tend to turn off and get bored but although there is a lot a strategy it is done so well that you don't feel bored, or at least I didn't.

The only thing that bothered me about this was the slave, Arin, he was just so unlikable and arrogant and to be honest the relationship between him and Kestrel was just really strange and not at all likely considering the situation. I understand that the author wanted us to really like Kestrel and the fact that she is so gentle towards her slaves is supposed to make us feel like she is badass by going against the crowds, but in reality she cant be that against it for the fact she has so many at her house. So the way that she lets Arin take over and act as though he is the king of the castle just seems slightly pushing it. I felt like he was the one in control, which when you consider her position in society it would be normal for her to be outraged at being trodden on, especially when he continues to embarrass her in front of her friends, surely someone who has lived a privileged life would have something to say about that.

I didn't mind that Kestrel was so indecisive because to be honest, I think that is what makes her character so realistic, how many teenagers do you know that have no idea what they do want but they know exactly what they don't want? Exactly.

The world building is exceptional and there wasn't any points in the book that I was confused with what was going on, which is pretty good going for a first book. There was very subtle foreshadowing in this book that I appreciated and it was obvious the effort taken to write this book which could have only been done by such a skilled author.

I felt like the writing flowed really well, the plot although sometimes slow at the start got incredibly interesting and dangerous. This is the first book in a trilogy, I believe, and I think that it has done a really great job at setting the scene and I am eagerly anticipating the other books, because if they continue at the standard of this book, it will be fantastic.
However, as a book blogger, small though I may be, having a reading slump is inconvenient and annoying because I won't have any reviews to post and therefore it will affect the readership of my blog. I feel a pressure to be reading more when in reality I just want to take it slow. To a normal person reading 3-4 books a month is pretty good going, but to a book review it is not. I am lucky in a way that because I had such a great summer of reading I have been able to have posts queued up however, they are running out and with it my enthusiasm for reading.

I never wanted reading to become a chore because it is something that I do for fun and to relax me, however, recently, probably through fault of my own I have been feeling a bit like a failure for not being able to read as much, both from being super busy and from just being lazy I guess. So that brings up the question of this post: Does reviewing books take away the pleasure of reading?

I do love this little blog and although I have a very small readership in comparison to the large bloggers and booktubers, I take pride in making it the best I can. Further pressure is put on when receiving books for review from publishers, something that makes me very proud but also very stressed, because I don't always have time to read the books before they come out, either because they aren't what I feel like reading at the moment or just because I am simply too busy to read. By not reading the books before the review date it seems rude to be taking the books without giving something back to the company.

All in all, I am not sure this post makes any sense at all, I am also not sure it even matters, I feel like I am putting pressure on myself for something that no one even cares about, I don't have a big readership so they won't care if I don't post for a while, so why do I feel so guilty about not reading?

If anyone has any thoughts about this topic talk to me on twitter @reviewswithemma I'd love to know your thoughts.
The hype around this book is crazy and I just had to read it. I managed to avoid spoilers at all costs and so I had literally no idea what this book was about before I started reading it, and that is exactly how you should go in to this book. So because of that I will not give you any spoilers at all, instead I will just focus on what I thought about it.

I must sadly and I don't know if this was because of the hype I was slightly disappointed. I just didn't think it was completely original and although I didn't completely guess the twist it just fell a little bit flat. However, in saying that the writing flowed very well and was very beautiful, it did keep me intrigued, that along with the shortness of the novel allowed me to start and finish this book within a few hours.

The characters are very interesting in this book and to be honest I cant say you get particularly close or fond of any of them but that's totally not the point, you're not supposed to like them, you are just supposed to be an onlooker viewing the proceedings.

I would recommend this book, certainly it is an interesting read. I didn't sob like many have stated that they have but it was poignant and powerful. This is such a difficult book to review without giving anything away, its just such a haunting novel.
It is common knowledge that JK Rowling was the first author to become a billionaire from writing (she has since given a way a large chuck of that is now a millionaire) but what is also common knowledge is that JK Rowling wrote a world that children and adults alike that they could let their imaginations sore and escape into the most wondrous world imaginable. The books have spun an eight film series that has made billions of pounds as well as a theme park and a successful studio tour, whilst the books and films have finished, the story lives on.

But you knew that already, of course, what I want to look at today and hopefully I will continue doing this with other books is looking at their covers both in the UK and the USA. They say we should never judge a book by its cover but that is the primary thing that the book is marketed by and the first thing to bring the book to the attention of the reader.

Because there have been so many covers I will just show you the first in the series, which in this case is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
That first note to San Franciscan Lauren sparks a series of e-mails that alters the landscape of each girl's summer -- and raises questions about how two girls who are so different will ever share a dorm room.
As the countdown to college begins, life at home becomes increasingly complex. With family relationships and childhood friendships strained by change, it suddenly seems that the only people Elizabeth and Lauren can rely on are the complicated new boys in their lives . . . and each other. Even though they've never met." -taken from Goodreads
I was pretty excited about this book as the synopsis sounded really intriguing. I thought that it was a really clever way of showing the experience of getting your college roommate and knowing that you will have to spend the next year with them despite not knowing anything other than their name.

This is a fun and quite addicting read about friendship and relationships as well as dealing with leaving home for the first time. I really enjoyed the duel POV as you were able to see obviously two sides of the story and to see how they both reacted to each other's emails.

I wouldn't necessarily say that I liked one more than the other because they both had moments were I thought that they were being irritating but then they also had their moments that were funny and real. I guess that is what I appreciated the most about this book is that the characters are both very real with real problems. The love interests weren't that developed or gave me a strong enough feeling to want to root for them working out but then I don't think that is the point in the story.

This book is about growing up and the summer before one of the biggest events in a teenagers life. It was fun, easy and slightly addicting, its nothing particularly memorable or brilliant but just an easy to read book that did the trick.
If you are not aware of what BAMB is, then in short it is a campaign to help support bookshops and specifically independent bookshops.

A bookshop for me is my happy place, it is where I go when I am stressed and overwhelmed, it is a place of escapism and solace. Unfortunately where I live there is (to my knowledge) NO independent bookshops. That's right there isn't a single one. This is upsetting and very worrying, there used to be plenty but because of financial issues they have all closed down and been replaced with chain brands. It makes me wonder that if a campaign like BAMB was around when these shops were in difficulty if they would have shut down...

Anyway, Books Are My Bag have teamed up with BookBridgr to get bloggers to talk about their favourite bookshop. My favourite bookshop is Waterstones, Cardiff. The Cardiff branch is the nearest branch to me and it is pretty large and stacked full of books, whilst the YA section isn't that fantastic, the fantasy, classics and graphic novel sections are phenomenal. I love, love, love to spend my time browsing the shelves and have been known to be there for several hours. I can almost never go in to that bookshop without making a purchase.

So that's my favourite bookshop, but what is yours? Is there any independent bookshops where you live?

I had an amazing dream! I was standing in a room that looked so much like an airport terminal, but I somehow knew that I was in fact dead. I was staring out huge windows, watching my boyfriend and family mourn me. A receptionist was calling names and those people were walking through a side door. I just stood, waiting. That's when I woke up and had to start writing!

Do you think that being an English teacher helps with writing?

I finished the novel before I became a teacher, but I wish I could go back in time and use the knowledge that I now have! With my next novel, I'll definitely be utilising some of my "teacher skills" haha

What is more rewarding writing or teaching?

Oh wow, what a great question! They are both soooo fulfilling for me, in such different ways. Teaching is rewarding on a daily basis- every time I see a lightbulb go off in a kid's brain, I'm reminded why I love what I do. Being able to interact with teenagers and actually have an effect on their education is... amazing. Writing is more of a once-in-a-blue-moon type of reward. Anytime I get an unexpected review on Amazon, for example! Most of the time, though, writing is a bit of a self-loathing process haha you have to remind yourself why you write. Whereas, when I teach, the kids remind me why I teach--I don't have to remind myself!

What are your favourite books? What are your most anticipated releases for 2014?

Oh gosh. Can I just link my Goodreads? Haha. Right now, I'm REALLY into The Lunar Chronicles series. I can't wait for the fourth instalment to be released!!!

Apart from being a lover of the written word is there anything else that you love?

I'm extremely obsessed with these things: WordPress, breakfast tacos (come to Austin, TX and I'll take you on a taco tour), Netflix, and Cards Against Humanity.

by Cat Winters
Published: October 2014
Publisher: Amulet Books
Genre: YA, historical fiction, with hints of fantasy

"Olivia Mead is a headstrong, independent girl—a suffragist—in an age that prefers its girls to be docile. It’s 1900 in Oregon, and Olivia’s father, concerned that she’s headed for trouble, convinces a stage mesmerist to try to hypnotize the rebellion out of her. But the hypnotist, an intriguing young man named Henri Reverie, gives her a terrible gift instead: she’s able to see people’s true natures, manifesting as visions of darkness and goodness, while also unable to speak her true thoughts out loud. These supernatural challenges only make Olivia more determined to speak her mind, and so she’s drawn into a dangerous relationship with the hypnotist and his mysterious motives, all while secretly fighting for the rights of women. Winters breathes new life into history once again with an atmospheric, vividly real story, including archival photos and art from the period throughout." - taken from goodreads

Wow. This is an important book. At first when I requested this book I must admit it was purely a cover decision, I thought it was going to be a fun horror novel. Oh my goodness was I in for a treat, because no, this is not a stereotypical horror novel with ghouls and monsters, but instead it is a horror novel about oppression and inequality. The horror is the injustice of what life used to be like before people had any sense. This is a book to make you talk and to make you think. I think it's going to be massive.

I have recently been reading up on feminism and the feminism movement and after reading this book it made me realise that unless there were no women to fight for the right to have their voice heard then just imagine how different life would be. The world (or at least 'first-world countries') has come so far since then, we have a long way to go before women are completely equal, but we have come so far and it is important to remember that. However, not only does this book bring up the issue of feminism, it also brings up the vote in general. I live in the UK and every time there is an election the number of people who have registered to vote dwindles rapidly, THIS IS NOT OKAY. People, not just women, but people, have fought to get the vote and to have the freedom to have their say in how the country is ruled and by not voting you are insulting them and being foolish, do not not vote just because it is easy, vote because you can and because you should.

Back to the actual book, the plot is very well thought out and it is clear that the novel has been researched extremely meticulously. A very nice aspect of the book is the pictures and diagrams from the period of the novel that are scattered throughout, it brings an interesting aspect to the novel. Olivia, the main protagonist, is a strong-minded woman who goes on such a journey throughout this book and I am so, so happy that even at the end she is independent and going out by herself. Henri and his sister, along with Frannie, are all brilliant and fun additions to the story and whilst not overly developed, because they don't really need to be, they help Olivia on her journey of escaping the ghouls that haunt her. Olivia's father was a monster, he is probably one of the worst characters I have read about, because of how 'normal' he seemed and at times I feared for Olivia and what he would do next. It so scary to think that there were actually men who had the same opinions and 'values' that he did and I really would like to think that there isn't any anymore, but I cant be too sure about that.

Overall, if you are thinking about reading this then do it, just pick it up and become enthralled and I challenge you to come away from it without thinking about the bigger picture that this book creates.
So here is my combined wrap up for the two months, I did really well in July as of course I was on holiday and had nothing else to do but I have had two pretty good reading months, until the end of August when I just couldn't seem to get in to a book.
Read my review here. I am so in love with this trilogy and this was just as amazing if not even better than the first book. Honestly it baffles how Cassandra Clare wrote these books at the same time as the Mortal Instruments as these are just on another level.

Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare

Read my review here. This was a brilliant conclusion for the trilogy, I was slightly concerned because I thought that I had heard a spoiler but when I actually read it I realised that it never actually happened, so I was pretty excited by that and also this was so beautiful and I miss Jem and Will now. Honestly read these even if you didn't like the Mortal Instruments because these are about a billion times better!

The Russian names were confusing and there wasn't any explanation of the way of Grisha or the army, but at about 50 pages onwards the explanations came and so did my interest with the story.

I don't know who the Four in Allegiant was but he certainly doesn't fit in with the Divergent, Insurgent or the Four from these novellas at all. I can only imagine what Allegiant would have been like if she had written him then as she has here.

Read my review here. I was really impressed by this, I was looking for something slightly lighter to read but still have a slight edge to it and this book is so perfect for that. Read my review here. The characters although have flaws were normal and realistic when you consider their position. Oh god this was such a brilliant book. Definitely my new favourite young adult contemporary book. I loved the way that it was written, the characters all had personality and flaws, they had fantastic relationships, amazing plot and I loved the progression of Emily's character throughout the book, from being unhealthily dependent on Solane to being a strong, independent teenager with friends who she makes memories. She is no longer known as 'the girl who is friends with Solane' but known as Emily instead. Argh all the characters and everything about this book was amazing and I loved it.

There was a bit of insta-love in this book but honestly it didn't really bother me too much, the aliens in this book weren't corny, which is the reason why I hadn't read a book about aliens. This was really easy to read and whilst not fantastic and flawed it was entertaining.

Obviously this series is not perfect and occasionally the descriptions of Daemon and her love get a little nauseating, the action and plot are undeniably good. I missed Dee in this book though and I can't help but feel that Katy is so focused on herself as to forget her friend, I really hope she sorts that out in the next book because Dee is going to need a friend.

Anya's Ghost by Vera Brogsol
This is a really interesting graphic novel. One of the first that I have read that hasn't been in colour as that is generally what I prefer, whilst this graphic novel hasn't changed that opinion completely, I will certainly be less resistant to buy a black and white novel in the future. The colour scheme, or lack of really complimented the story because I think it showed both Anya's and Emily's thoughts and mirrored the lack of colour they saw in life. Really short, easy, fun story and I really liked the illustrations, they kind of reminded me of the Scott Pilgrim drawings
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
This is a soft, contemporary novel that has great characters, a fun plot line and a reasonable romance. However, towards the end of the book the romance got a little too much and a bit too soppy. I don't like it when authors make contemporary book from a teenagers perspective and make their love seem so pure and poetic because it just isn't that way at all. That was my only issue though and I liked the way this author wrote so I will be picking up more of her books.

In the next few months I will be posting reviews of the books that I have been sent (I currently have a back log of book reviews waiting to go up, hence the wait.) So as a little show of appreciation before I am able to post a blog with the reviews that each book deserve, I thought I would highlight some of the books that they have recently published along with their descriptions.
